America’s biggest ports handled a record 50.5 million shipping containers last year

In total, the nation’s nine biggest ports handled a record 50.5 million shipping containers, as measured by twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, in 2021, an increase in total container volume of 16% over 2020. At the nine biggest U.S. ports, imported shipping containers loaded with goods increased last year by more than 17% from 2020 and 20% from 2019’s pre-pandemic levels.

U.S. DOT says port grants doubled for 2022

The US Maritime Administration announced on Wednesday nearly $450 million in FY22 competitive grant funding for projects to help ports speed cargo flows and ultimately lower costs for consumers.

That amount, to be made available through MARAD’s Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP), nearly doubles the amount released late last year in FY21 grants.

ONE, Maersk add sailings, extra loaders to offset missed trans-Pacific calls

Ocean Network Express (ONE) is adding trans-Pacific sailings between North Asia and the US West Coast to help boost capacity, especially for shippers in South Korea and Japan, for at least the next three months. Additionally, Maersk is planning to add more gap loaders to offset missed sailings in Prince Rupert and Vancouver.

Major shippers urge FMC to consider national freight portal

Representatives of Amazon and FedEx are arguing for the government to keep better data on the ocean supply chain. They told the FMC that the lack of consistent, uniform data about ocean carriers services and vessel calls to the U.S. creates inefficiencies and raises costs.

Service reliability woes deepen for Indian shippers

Indian shippers have a worsening sailing schedule reliability picture to deal with in the coming weeks. Two premium services out of West India – one connecting to North Europe and the other to the East Coast – are due to have fewer port calls in March and April. 

Thus, the Europe-Pakistan-India Consortium (EPIC) will skip Hazira, a gateway for north India hinterlands, and Antwerp on eight upcoming sails.
